Before Beethoven’s ‘Eroica’ came his first breakthrough symphony. The composer’s Symphony No. 2 is packed full of innovation, all of it concealed deftly under a joyous veneer of wit, lyricism and playful energy. This fascinating and ever-engaging symphony is heard after a piece every bit as spontaneous and open-hearted: the song for violin and orchestra that is Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1, played here by the ‘fearless’ (The Guardian) virtuoso Tamsin Waley-Cohen. Mendelssohn’s vivid musical postcard from Scotland opens our jovial return to Cheltenham Town Hall.
