Beethoven’s first violin sonata dates from the pivotal period of his arrival in Vienna. In his D major Sonata, with a variation set that focuses as much on the piano as the violin, we can already sense the increased dialogue between instruments that would transform the genre while the G major Sonata contains one of Beethoven’s most characteristically moving slow movements. Already, the second of Beethoven’s cello sonatas demonstrates his gift for creating a multifaceted drama between the two instruments while its successor presents a charming journey through lyrical rhapsody and rhythmic precision.
