Beethoven’s violin sonatas trace his whole life, while his cello sonatas reinvented a once perfunctory instrument as a vehicle for intense expression rather than a provider of plodding basslines. Across three concerts at the Holywell Music Room beginning here, Solo Cellists of the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra, Peter Adams and Mats Lidström join Oxford Philharmonic Concertmasters Carmine Lauri and Tamás András for pairings of two sonatas for each instrument, beginning with violin sonatas playful and heroic, and cello sonatas concentrated and monumental.
