Lukáš Vondráček piano

Crucial new impulses were flooding into Beethoven’s music at the time of his two sets of Piano Sonatas, Op. 10 and 14. The classical structures known to his forbears were stretched almost to breaking point by the composer’s heightened musical emotions, a process that reached a high point in the palpable anguish of his C minor Sonata, the ‘Pathétique’. Following his electrifying debut at the BBC Proms in the summer, Czech pianist Lukáš Vondráček comes to the Holywell Music Room for this chronological traversal of six pivotal sonatas by Beethoven that chart not just the rapid maturing of the piano sonata, but of the instrument itself.
