Sounding Beethoven: ‘Archduke’ Trio and Septet
Sounding Beethoven: ‘Archduke’ Trio and Septet
Beethoven Piano Trio No. 7 in B flat major, Op. 97, ‘Archduke’
Beethoven Septet in E flat major, Op. 20
Rautio Piano Trio
Soloists of the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra
As the culmination of this Sounding Beethoven weekend, two of his most celebrated chamber works are heard in contrasting sound worlds, revealing how performances of his music have evolved across two centuries. The great ‘Archduke’ Trio, described as his finest work in the form, is performed on period instruments, including a copy of a Graf fortepiano. Then musicians from Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra bring the exuberant Septet to life on modern instruments: this work was described by the American poet Walt Whitman as ‘like nature laughing in the sunshine' and was Beethoven’s most popular work in his lifetime.
