Since becoming the youngest winner of the Leeds Piano Competition for four decades, Sunwook Kim has established himself as a pianist to be reckoned with both emotionally and intellectually. His concert at the Holywell Music Room presents one of the final chapters in our journey through piano sonatas by Beethoven and is framed by the contrasting stillness and frenzy of the composer’s ‘Moonlight’ and ‘Appassionata’ Sonatas. What comes in between is no less gripping but altogether more quirky: the ironic parodies of Beethoven’s Sonata No. 16 and the sudden aggressions of his Sonata No. 22.
