Second Symphony
Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Op. 37
Beethoven Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 36
Marios Papadopoulos conductor/piano
As Beethoven learned of his encroaching deafness, the cruellest of diagnoses for a composer, he made his first musical statements in defiance at the turn of the 18th century. The composer’s Symphony No. 2 launches amid dark clouds but obliterates them with resilience, humour and pure joie de vivre. Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 presents a series of audacious stand-offs between orchestra and soloist before looking instead to expressions of unprecedented depth and beauty. In every way, Beethoven knew the game was changing. These pieces show us exactly how.
