When Mendelssohn’s first piano trio appeared in 1840, it was hailed as the best work of its kind ever written. Schumann wasted no time declaring that Mendelssohn’s talents were ‘in full bloom’. The trio, with its abundance of melodies and subtle brilliance, represents ‘easy listening’ in the best sense of the phrase. An ensemble drawn from the Orchestra with our Music Director at the piano offers Mendelssohn’s trio at Merton’s beautiful TS Eliot Theatre, alongside treats including Haydn’s bucolic Trio in G major.
