At the height of the Second World War, Ralph Vaughan Williams wrote his fifth symphony. Against the severity of war, his music dared to glimpse the serenity of peace. For a contrast to this enigmatic, impassioned and redemptive work, look no further than the technicolour tune-fest that is Richard Rodney Bennett’s Partita − and another score lined with the sass, sexiness and sophistication of jazz, Ravel’s toe-tapping Piano Concerto in G. Nobody conducts this music like John Wilson does, joined at the piano here by the inimitable Louis Schwizgebel.
