Béla Bartók’s First Piano Concerto was composed between August and November 1926, as his modernist voice was reaching maturity. It comes at the end of a year devoted to the piano, in which he also wrote his Piano Sonata and the suite Out of Doors. The piano drives through the complex, percussive nature of the first and third movements, and is alone with a sparse atmosphere of percussion in the second. Taking on this fierce, uncompromising music is the Beijing-born virtuoso Yuja Wang, whose fearless command of the instrument make her an ideal interpreter as she debuts with the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra.
