Marios Papadopoulos piano
Our survey of Beethoven’s most penetrating piano sonatas continues at the Sheldonian Theatre as Marios Papadopoulos plays sonatas from 1814-21, a period of profound change in Beethoven’s life and outlook. Freed from ideals of beauty, this was a time in which the composer began to pursue a more expressive and existential path – one hinted at in the drama of his Op. 90 Sonata, heard in full-flight in the time-stopping third movement of his Op. 101 Sonata and taken to its height in the yearning, sighing submission that characterises his Op. 110 Sonata.
