Korngold & Tchaikovsky

Wednesday, 6 March 2019 - 19:30

Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford

About the event

Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35

Symphony No. 5 in E minor, Op. 64

Carmine Lauri violin

Ben Gernon conductor

Fate dealt a cruel hand to both Tchaikovsky and Korngold. As the former composer felt his world falling apart, he railed against his impending destiny with inspiring optimism in the fifth symphony. Korngold, exiled in Hollywood from Nazi-occupied Vienna, longed to write for the concert stage and plundered his best movie scores for the most haunting, expressive and beautiful themes to make his violin concerto. Ben Gernon makes his debut with the Orchestra in this concert of heart-on-sleeve masterpieces featuring our own concertmaster Carmine Lauri as the soloist.

The concert is scheduled to end at approximately 9:20 pm.

Tickets: £45 £35 £25 £15
