Making a welcome return to the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra, Steven Isserlis plays Elgar's masterwork for cello and orchestra, with its famous opening theme inspired by the line of the Malvern Hills. Isserlis notes its popularity is '...not just because it's so full of beautiful tunes and touching moments, there's all that of course but it's actually a piece with something very important to say, a deep statemenr.' To close, Dvořák's ninth symphony brings together his experiences of Native American music and the symphonic tradition of his European homeland.
