Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 2

Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 2

Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 2

09 Mar 2023 | 19:30 | Sheldonian Theatre, Broad Street

Dvořák In Nature’s Realm, Op. 91  Side-by-Side
Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18
Shostakovich Symphony No. 9 in E flat major, Op. 70

Lise de la Salle piano
Andrew Litton conductor

When Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 9 appeared in 1945, it wasn’t the musical victory parade that the Soviets expected. Grandeur and ceremony were absent. In their place were translucence, compactness and a classical discipline that spoke of a composer navigating emotional difficulties by retreating into music itself. If the ninth is lined with melancholy, the same emotion thrusts out of Rachmaninov’s most enduring piano concerto. Lise de la Salle is the soloist in the composer’s rollercoaster ride towards a thundering climax, coming after Dvořák’s idyllic orchestral walk in the countryside.
