SIBELIUS Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47, 1904 version*
TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Op. 74, Pathtique

Maxim Vengerov violin/conductor
Marios Papadopoulos conductor*

Artist in Residence Maxim Vengerov returns with the rarely heard original version of Sibelius's ethereal Violin Concerto, back by public demand after his 2015 performance in Oxford. Ice and fire merged in the 1904 genesis of this remarkable work, recorded by Vengerov with the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra and for which special performing rights have been granted to Vengerov by the Sibelius family. Standing high at the summit of the orchestral landscape, Tchaikovsky described his 'Pathetique' Symphony as the best thing I ever composed or shall compose. It is a creation that quests profound intimacy and fathomless introspection.
