A major theme of the 2015/16 season is our commemoration of the 160th anniversary of the death of Robert Schumann. Throughout the Schumann Series, the Orchestra will be taking us on a musical journey performing all four symphonies as well as the stormy Cello Concerto with Leonard Elschenbroich and the sublime Piano Concerto with national treasure John Lill:
Schumann series I: 24 October 2015, 19.30
Schumann series II: 14 November 2015, 19.30
The principal players of the Oxford Philharmonic have become a tight-knit family of like-minded musicians, enjoying an exceptional degree of rapport. That rapport lies at the heart of chamber music making and in recent years the Orchestra’s musicians have explored all of the familiar formats – piano trios, string quartets, wind quintets – each with a constantly developing repertoire, from Schubert to Shostakovich. They perform across Oxford in the atmospheric surroundings of College chapels to the grand interior of the Ashmolean Museum:
Chamber series I: 24 January 2016, 15.00
Summer evenings amid the dreaming spires. This year we look forward to a remarkable programme 'Moscow Nights' directed by Co-concertmaster Yuri Zhislin, concerti by Bach and Vivaldi alongside the brilliant Ilya Gringolts, and a very special tribute to Shakespeare as part of the worldwide celebrations marking the bard's quatercentenary.
