Sonata No. 21 in B flat major, D. 960
Vingt Regards sur l'enfant-Jésus, Nos 1, 8, 14, 19, 10
Not much can follow Schubert’s late piano sonatas. But after all the inwardness and fragility of the Sonata in B flat, Steven Osborne continues his festival debut by marking 75 years since the publication of a true one-off: Olivier Messiaen’s Vingt Regards sur l’enfant Jésus. For the festival’s final recital, Osborne – who was invited to study the work with Messiaen’s widow Yvonne Loriod after she heard him playing her late husband’s music – presents a selection of the composer’s otherworldly, colour-strewn portraits in the splendid surroundings of Christ Church Cathedral.
The concert is scheduled to end at approximately 10 pm.
