Beethoven & Mahler

Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford

About the event

Unfortunately, soprano Heidi Stober has withdrawn from this performance of Mahler's 4th Symphony. We are delighted to announce that Kate Royal will perform in her place.

Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61

Symphony No. 4 in G major

Natalia Lomeiko violin
Kate Royal soprano

Marios Papadopoulos conductor

Our own concertmaster Natalia Lomeiko and first-time visitor Heidi Stober star in this concert in which both Beethoven and Mahler trade railing angst for beauteous contentment. Mahler glanced elsewhere in the slimmed-down pastoral of his fourth symphony and produced some of his most heart-easing music: clouds gather, only to be gently breathed away by the soprano's heavenly song. After the insistent, compelling anger of Beethoven's early symphonies, his violin concerto appears to brim over with a joy just as forthright and spontaneous.
