About the event

Overture to Ruslan and Ludmila

Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43

Scheherazade, Op. 35

Anna Tsybuleva piano
Yuri Temirkanov conductor

Continuing our Russian focus, 2015 Leeds International Piano Competition winner and Oxford Piano Festival alumna Anna Tsybuleva performs alongside the great conductor and Music Director of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Yuri Temirkanov, for an evening of fiery orchestral classics. Fantastical themes act as inspiration for both the Overture to Glinka’s opera Ruslan and Ludmila and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, the latter evoking exotic images of the fairytale wonders of Arabia. Rachmaninov based his set of 24 variations for piano and orchestra on the famous theme by Niccolò Paganini; the last variation of which caused even the famously dextrous pianist considerable trepidation before his world premiere performance of the work in 1934.

Young Artists' Platform, free admission, 6.30pm
