Oxford Philomusica reinterprets the role of the symphony orchestra for the 21st century. It offers concert performances with both a symphony and chamber orchestra, chamber music and recitals, educational programmes for school and professional postgraduate involvement, a platform for young artists, the encouragement of new compositions, recordings and media work, and tours. Oxford Philomusica is dedicated to the highest standards of artistic excellence and integrity and to serving the Oxfordshire and the Thames Valley region.
Our Music Director, Marios Papadopoulos, is the founder and driving force behind this new organisation (founded 1998) which the Association of British Orchestras has recognised as the fastest growing professional symphony orchestra in the country, fulfilling an identified local regional need, and with a growing national and international reputation.
Oxford Philomusica combines several unique features, besides its core activity, which make it a very interesting and exciting organisation. These include the annual International Piano Festival & Summer Academy regularly attracting maestros of world wide repute, a Residency at the University of Oxford, formal partnerships with both Oxford City and County Councils as well as the County Music Service, and an active and extensive community programme. It has also attracted an impressive cadre of supporters, and established a funding model which is completely independent of any form of government funded subsidy and which has been successful in these strained economic times.
