Oxford Philomusica launches its Britten Series to celebrate this British composer’s centenary with an Armistice Day performance of his compact, intensely dramatic, war-time Sinfonia – which visits, unflinchingly, grief and fear before finding resigned repose. Brahms’ equally humanistic approach to death conveys the same message – ‘they shall be comforted’.
