On the eve of the 200th anniversary of the death of Joseph Haydn, the Philomusica joins forces once again with the world-renowned New College Choir, 'one of the glories of our musical heritage', for this performance of Haydn’s enduring masterpiece. The recording with the same forces, recently released on the Oxford Philomusica’s own label, was acclaimed Choral CD of the Month in the December edition of BBC Music Magazine. In direct line of succession to the Handelian oratorio tradition, The Creation is in turn dramatic, humorous and reverential and has held generations of listeners spellbound from first bar to last.

The Oxford Philomusica's bicentennial tribute to Dr. Haydn, Friends, Followers and Forbears opens with a programme which recalls the great composer's ever youthful spirit, matching one of his most sprightly London Symphonies with the world première of a work by an outstanding composer of the present generation, Nimrod Borenstein. This contemporary perspective of a subject which Haydn addressed in his own most famous work, The Creation, has been commissioned by the Meitar family in honour of the 75th birthday year of Zvi Meitar, whose Family Fund is one of the Philomusica's most generous supporters. The concert is completed by excerpts from the teenage Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night's Dream and the most popular concerto by his contemporary, Max Bruch.
