Following last year’s highly successful event at the Banqueting House in London, the Oxford Philomusica’s next fundraising event will take place at the stunning Paul Hamlyn Hall of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden on 13 June 2010. A champagne reception will precede a concert by the Orchestra followed by a sit-down dinner and an auction. The programme will feature Rossini’s Overture to William Tell, Bruch’s Violin Concerto in G minor and Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture.

Vivaldi’s familiar four concertos are presented in tandem with the colourful companion pieces written late last century by the Argentinian master of the ‘new tango’, Astor Piazzolla.

Oxford Philomusica and Christ Church Cathedral Choir, Oxford perform two of the most popular pieces of music for the souls of the departed: the Fauré Requiem and Eternal Light: A Requiem by Howard Goodall. The ethereal and haunting melodies of the Fauré are paired with Goodall's unorthodox interpretation of the Requiem Mass for which he won Composer of the Year in the Classical Brits Awards 2009.

John Rutter makes a welcome return to conduct what will be only the second performance of his Harp Concerto, for which the Orchestra will be joined by Catrin Finch, described as the ‘The Queen of Harps’. This delightful springtime concert opens and closes with two Gallic backward glances – Ravel’s formalised tribute to friends fallen in the First World War, and Bizet’s only, but brilliant and classically-conceived, symphonic excursion.

A Creepy-Crawly concert featuring those insects we either love or loath! Alasdair will be in ‘David Attenborough’ mode and the audience are invited to come dressed as a bug* or to bring along a toy or home-made bug. Music includes The Wasps Overture, The Ugly Bug Ball and a Tarantella for Tarantulas as well as a unique and unforgettable version of The Flight of the Bumble Bee!

*Come dressed as a bug ready to make your antennae in the pre-concert activities from 2pm.

This pairing of two clearly contrasting but subtly complementary works promises an evening of youthful optimism. The first desks of Oxford Philomusica’s much-admired string section come together to play Mendelssohn’s astonishing manifestation of teenage talent, before the Orchestra in full force embarks upon the epic and ultimately uplifting musical journey which is Mahler’s First Symphony.

As part of our Oxford College Series and Educational Programme, Oxford Philomusica will collaborate with St Catz and a small group of exceptionally talented musicians from the College, to present one of the most revered chamber works, Mozart’s Piano Quintet, and the same composer’s perennial masterpiece, Symphony No. 40 in G minor. This concert is an early contribution to Catz50, a birthday celebration of the foundation of St Catherine’s College.

Oxford Philomusica’s virtuoso wind players step into the limelight for Handel’s elegant Flute Suite from The Water Music, a delightful Oboe Concerto by the Venetian Marcello, and a spectacular finale – Bach’s ‘high-wire’ Second Brandenburg Concerto. The programme, again directed by Marios Papadopoulos in his ‘first-amongst-equals’ Kapellmeister role, is completed by Telemann’s depiction of the ebb and flow of the Elbe.
