Brahms Series

  • Brahms
Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor, Op. 15
Piano Concerto No. 2 in B♭ major, Op. 83
  • Marios Papadopoulos Piano
  • Lukas Karytinos Conductor
The opportunity to compare Brahms’ two Piano Concertos side by side in performance occurs only rarely – not least by virtue of the formidable challenge presented to the soloist. That challenge is met with characteristic courage by Oxford Philomusica’s tireless founder, Marios Papadopoulos, who, this evening, makes a remarkable 100th appearance at the Sheldonian Theatre as the Orchestra’s Music Director.

Alissa Margulis

Thursday 26 November 2009
Location map Sheldonian Theatre, 8pm
Brahms Series

  • Brahms
Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 77
Symphony No. 4 in E minor, Op. 98
  • Alissa Margulis Violin
  • Marios Papadopoulos Conductor
The Orchestra’s survey of the symphonies of Brahms concludes with Brahms’ final thoughts in the medium, perhaps the most emotionally comprehensive of the four, by turns purposeful, tranquil, joyous and, ultimately, compellingly powerful. Alissa Margulis, endorsed by Mischa Maisky as ‘a brilliant young violinist’ plays Brahms’ Concerto, justly loved as much for its elegiac Adagio as its infectiously vital ‘Gypsy’ finale.

'1959 – It was a very good year…'

  • Ronnie Scott's Big Band
  • Oxford Philomusica
  • Pete Long Director
  • Liane Carroll
  • The London Voices

This concert sees the meeting of two great British icons, both celebrating their 50th anniversary this year. The Ronnie Scott Big Band will be coming to the MINI Plant Oxford to mark the birthday of the designer of the classic Mini, Sir Alec Issigonis.

For its third appearance at the car plant, Oxford Philomusica will team up with the jazz band to recreate a 1950s jazz club feel. It was a magical era when popular music was coloured by the sophisticated instrumentations of arrangers like Nelson Riddle, and delivered by a string of unforgettable artists like Frank Sinatra.

Programme to include:
Take Five, Got You Under My Skin, Mack The Knife, Lady Is A Tramp, From Russia With Love, Moon River, Bring Me Sunshine, Cheek To Cheek, I Could Have Danced All Night.

A limited number of free post-concert tours of MINI Plant Oxford will be available on a first come, first served basis through Oxford Philomusica on 020 8450 1060. Places will be confirmed by separate ticket. Not open to people with a heart pacemaker or children under the age of 14.
