Composers' Workshop

  • Oxford Philomusica
Students will be given the rare opportunity of hearing their works played by a fully professional orchestra, Oxford Philomusica. At the end of the session, one work will be selected to be given its world première by Oxford Philomusica later on in the year.

Piano Masterclass

  • Marios Papadopoulos
Oxford Philomusica's Music Director, a concert pianist in his own right and founder of the Oxford Philomusica International Piano Festival, will work with students on a wide range of interpretation and technique in this masterclass for pianists.

Violin Masterclass

  • Mark Messenger
The Head of Strings at the Royal College of Music and a member of the Bochmann String Quartet, Mark Messenger is much in demand as a teacher and competition adjudicator. A former Director of Chamber Music at the Aberystwyth International Summer Music Festival, he now regularly delivers chamber music courses at the Britten-Pears school in Aldeburgh. Mark has developed education and outreach activities for many orchestras as well as the London String Quartet Foundation.

Flute Masterclass

  • Anthony Robb

Described as an “outstanding individual player” by The Times, Anthony Robb is one of the most versatile flautists of his generation.

His career has ranged from playing principal flute in all of London's symphony orchestras, to concerto performances with The Halle, BBC Concert Orchestra, Sinfonia 21 and Oxford Philomusica, where he has been principal flute for ten years.

Spontaneous Music Composition in Community Settings

  • Sam Glazer
Musicians, teachers and students are invited to participate in a spontaneous composition workshop with animateur Sam Glazer. Participants will explore group improvisation techniques and work together to create new pieces of music, which will be performed at the end of the workshop. Cellist Sam Glazer has led music projects in schools and other community settings for ENO Baylis, Wigmore Hall and the Royal Academy of Music as well as working with Oxford Philomusica. He plays with the band 'firefly', who recently performed at the Spitalfields Festival.

Conducting Masterclass

  • Peter Stark
Hailed as one of the leading figures of a new generation of British conductors, Peter Stark has worked with many of the finest orchestras in the world. Currently Artistic Director of the West of England Philharmonic, Professor of Conducting at the National Youth Orchestra and Senior Fellow of Conducting and Orchestral Studies at Trinity College of Music, he will lend his experience and vast knowledge of technique to aspiring conductors.

Piano Masterclass

  • Hamish Milne
One of Britain’s leading pianists, Hamish Milne has appeared as soloist with most of the leading British orchestras, has given over two hundred broadcasts for the BBC and has toured on four continents. He is also well known as a chamber musician and recording artist. He is a Professor of Piano at The Royal Academy of Music and a Professor at the University of London.

Vocal Masterclass

  • Mark Wildman
Mark Wildman, Head of Vocal Studies at the Royal Academy of Music, will offer his expertise in a masterclass for aspiring singers. A national and international competition prizewinner, many of his current and former students sing as principals in major opera companies internationally.

Orchestral Apprenticeship Auditions

Strings only
This scheme was created in 1999 to provide students enrolled full-time in the Faculty of Music with orchestral experience and training by playing a limited number of concerts with Oxford Philomusica. The opportunity to play in four concerts is offered to each successful candidate plus an award of £100 per concert played.
